Health departments have robust surveillance systems in place for tracking influenza-like illness, or ILI, that are used to monitor seasonal influenza epidemics every fall and winter.
The definition of ILI is typically fever plus a cough or sore throat. Because these symptoms are similar to those of COVID-19,
traditional ILI surveillance metrics might give an idea of how COVID-19 is affecting our community. Currently, visits to emergency departments are high for this time of year. Deaths associated with pneumonia/influenza are also high.
However, the percent of laboratory specimens testing positive for flu has dropped dramatically. This pattern suggests influenza-like illness in our community is currently being caused by other respiratory viruses,
such as SARS-CoV2.
